BMW B47 intake manifold is one of the most frequently remanufactured intake manifolds in our workshop. The B47 engine was fitted in BMW 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Series, X1, X2, X3 and X5 with 2.0d displacement from 2014 onwards. Despite being a relatively new design, the B47 intake manifold shows several characteristic failure points.
Most common failure causes of the BMW B47 intake manifold:
Manifold leaks:
In the BMW B47 intake manifold, leaks occur at the swirl flap shaft axis, on the side of the electric actuator. The cause is simultaneous wear of the control lever and the shaft seal. An oil or exhaust gas leak in this area is visible as characteristic contamination around the actuator and can lead to rough engine idle as well as boost and lambda sensor errors when the leak is significant.
Swirl flap play:
The B47 swirl flap mechanism operates in adverse thermal conditions. Carbon deposits and oil create an abrasive “paste”. Over time, play develops on the shafts and flap seats, which, combined with carbon buildup inside the manifold, leads to gradual flap jamming and prevents their free movement.
Control mechanism wear:
The electric actuator is connected to the swirl flap shaft via a control lever. In the BMW B47 intake manifold, this lever wears over time and in extreme cases detaches completely, causing fault code P2015 (ISTA 2F8500) to appear and the engine to enter limp mode.
Swirl flap jamming:
Carbon deposits accumulating on the flap mechanism cause gradual jamming. A seized flap mechanism is one of the main causes of fault code P2015 (ISTA 2F8500) in the engine ECU, resulting in power loss and the engine entering limp mode.
Remanufacturing of the BMW B47 intake manifold at PT-PRO includes cleaning, comprehensive remanufacturing of swirl flaps using new reinforced components, eliminating play in the process. After remanufacturing, each manifold undergoes a leak test and inspection of the actuator’s electrical parameters and operating range.
